nim_poster_1944_2844Many of us want to lead better lives, in which we consume less and give back more. Whether that means buying products that are eco-friendly, or made from recycled goods, or switching to a more sustainable diet, there are many small steps we can take to lower the impact we make on our surroundings. But what if we took radical steps to literally ‘clean up our acts’? Colin Beavan, the author of No Impact Man: The Adventures of a Guilty Liberal Who Attempts to Save the Planet, and the Discoveries He Makes About Himself and Our Way of Life in the Process, did just that.

The book accompanies a documentary about his year-long journey to eliminate his personal impact on the environment. Beaven changes his life completely, by eating vegetarian, buying only local food, and turning off the refrigerator. He also commits to a life without wasteful amenities, so that means no elevators, no television, no cars, busses, or airplanes, no toxic cleaning products, no electricity, no material consumption, and no garbage.

Even with all these incredible changes, there’s still a catch: Beaven and his family live in New York City! Shutting out the temptations of the city may have been easy for Beaven, but for his wife Michelle, and their two-year-old daughter the transition was anything but easy. Check out the trailer below:
