My Best Recycled Purchase – What’s Yours?

Here’s mine (see picture, and yes, my purchase is the whole kitchen minus the appliances): When we bought our house, there was a very cramped, dark kitchen. One thing led to another, and first one wall came down, and then the next, and before we knew it we had removed the dark cabinetry and were in need of a kitchen for newly big space. Luck would have it that we have a very good friend who has been the salvage king of Northern New England, and he was taking a high-end Smallbone of Devizes kitchen out of a house and replacing it with cabinets made from recycled barn boards from Vermont barns. How much was it worth? Maybe $50,000. He called us up, excited about what a perfect fit the kitchen would be in our new house, and sold it to us for $3,000. We have loved it. And what a fabulous bargain! It came with the island tile and cabinets, as well as all the cupboards, and even the cutting board.
