winetowater1Bartender Doc Hendley, one of CNN’s top ten 2009 heroes, helps give clean water to the developing world, and raises money for his 501 (c)(3) Wine to Water non-profit aid organization at wine tasting events.

Over 1 billion people in the world today lack access to adequate water and sanitation. The Wine to Water organization is devoted to fighting this epidemic. In their promotional material they mention that wine symbolizes fortune in our society, and their goal is to give the fortunate population an opportunity to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves. They note that the very first miracle that Jesus performed was turning water into wine, and that “Wine to Water’s goal is to allow Jesus to turn His miracle around for the needy people of this world. It is our prayer that Jesus Christ will use those of us who have plenty to help provide someone who is less fortunate with the gift of clean water.”

dochendleyCurrently, Wine to Water has projects in Darfur, Sudan; Kampala, Uganda; Khartoum, Sudan; New Delhi; India; Phnom Penh, Cambodia; and Trujillo, Peru.

You can get involved by hosting a benefit for Wine to Water in your community, school, or home. Wine tastings, whether in restaurant or home settings, have always been a part of Wine to Water, and they think they are a fun way to gather your friends or community together while helping a good cause. Though wine tastings are a popular fundraiser, Wine to Water also welcomes and encourage other ideas. They suggest that you be creative in your efforts to raise awareness and support for Wine To Water. Other ideas include: a benefit concert, a fundraising dinner, 5K race or walk, or school dance.
