Lovely Scents

newcherrysticks-web-largeAs an urban dweller, and a pet owner, it’s often hard for me to neutralize the air in my small space. Unlike those who have the luxury of flinging open their windows to the great outdoors, I have to come up with more creative ways to keep my home smelling fresh. We’re inundated by commercials hawking chemical laden products (that overpower any room), and we all know that these products definitely do not fall under the “green” heading. So I went in search of something eco-friendly and fabulous. What I found is Red Flower, a company inspired by nature and founded on the principles of world traditions, sustainable sourcing, ritual, well-being and aesthetics.

Launched in 1999 at Barneys New York, the line started with just six candles and two organic flower teas, but today it continues to evolve and grow, with over a hundred products.

Red Flower is the brainchild of Yael Alkalay, who found inspiration in her roots and cultural heritage. Alkalay is the descendant of eight generations of Turkish grand Rabbis, Kiev musicians, and farmers from the pampas of Argentina. Her grandfather was the first dermatologist in Bulgaria, and she has traveled extensively to maintain family ties and traditions.

Although not all of their products are completely organic, their Organic Room Diffusers are absolutely amazing. My pick is the Cherry Blossom scent which includes long palm wood stems, Bulgarian rose buds, and ripe cherries from a demeter certified, bio-dynamic blend, encased in a recycled Spanish glass vase. It comes packaged in 77% post consumer recycled paper, and it’s printed at a 100% wind powered plant. Hopefully my cats like it as much as I do!
