Purple lilacs next to a fence.April is the cruelest

month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land, mixing memory and desire, stirring dull roots with spring rain.” — T. S. Eliot

Lilacs are in bloom on the east coast of the U.S. (yes, as per the quote, it is April), and cut branches redolent with lilac flowers are being placed in vases and throughout homes. The scent is sweet and floral.

Herbalist Jeanne Rose notes that for professionally made lilac absolute or perfume alcohol, you’ll need to make it yourself, and she offers directions for how to do that. She warns that any substitute out there, unless it costs $100,000 a kilohoas, is a fake.
