DIY Reflexology for Your Adrenal Glands
Adapted from The Reflexology Atlas, Bernard C. Kolster, M.D. and Astrid Waskowiak, M.D. (Healing Arts Press, 2003).
Between everything, who doesn’t need a boost for their adrenals?
The adrenal glands are small organs that are part of the endocrine system and sit like hats on the upper poles of the kidneys. Each consists of a cortex and a medulla.
The adrenal cortex produces hormones that regulate levels of fluids and electrolytes, blood sugar levels, and the production of sexual hormones. These corticosteriods, as they’re called, also have anti-inflammatory qualities. The adrenal medulla produces the important hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline. Adrenaline is known as a stress hormone because it is secreted in sutations of stress, fear, and panic and enables the body to react quickly.
Massage of the reflex zones of the adrenal glands takes place on the soles of the feet.
Massaging the Zone of the Adrenal Glands
This small zone is located at the base of the second and third metatarsal bones. (The metatarsal bones are the long bones from the toes to the arch, the first metatarsal bone being the long bone connecting to the big toe, the second one next to the big toe one, etc.) Massage it point by point with the tip of your thumb, adjusting the pressure based on the sensitivity of your partner or how it feels, if you are doing it for yourself.
If you find a painful spot in the zone of the adrenal glands, use steady pressure followed by some strokes.
When you have massaged both feet, end the massage with soft strokes.
