large_102308david-byrneWe all know about David Byrne from his days with seminal rock group The Talking Heads, but did you know that he’s an avid cyclist? Since the early 1980s, David has been riding a bike as his principal means of transportation in New York City. When he discovered folding bikes, he started taking them with him on his travels around the world. Initially his city cycling was convenient and not politically motivated, but the more he traveled by bike, the more he became hooked on this mode of transportation.

His latest book called Bicycle Diaries, chronicles his observations and insights as he pedals through major cities across the globe. But his insights aren’t just focused on music. Traveling throughout Buenos Aires, Istanbul, San Francisco, London, Berlin, and Manila, he also focuses on politics and culture. He gives readers an insider’s view of New York City, and marinates on contemporary ruins in places like Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Columbus.

The book is pure Byrne, peppered with his humor and curiosity, readers delve into everything from fashion, to architecture, cultural isolation, globalization, and the radical new ways that some cities are slowly becoming more bike-friendly.
