16-Year-Old Solves Waste Crisis

burdSo, you know how we have this ridiculous waste crisis going on? With dumps and landfills filling up by the day, it seems that trash could overtake our planet quite easily. Especially since a lot of people don’t recycle, and it takes plastic 1000 years to decompose. Or does it? Scientists have spent years and years attempting to find an organic way to decompose plastic – with no success. Funny, then, that 16-year-old Daniel Burd was able to put them to shame in his high school science fair. Daniel realized that, if plastic does decompose after 1000 years, then there must be some microorganism that decomposes it. He studied microorganisms and their effects on the degradation of plastic bags, interbreeding the most successful strains until he came up with a microorganism that would degrade plastic 43% in 6 weeks. ECO-WIN!!!!!!!!! You go, Daniel! Eco-revolution, here we come!
