12 Wonderful Reasons to Wear Linen

Submitted by on Tuesday, 3 August 2010No Comment

Linen is a beautiful, “active” fabric to wear on hot days. “Active” fibers are those that breathe, and provide ventilation to the body, absorb moisture, and help maintain body temperature. (Active fibers are made of natural materials, which have a hollow structure that absorbs moisture and allows for the evaporation of humidity.)

Linen is made from the stalk of the flax plant. Known as “flax linen,” it is one of the world’s oldest natural fibers. Linen’s natural color ranges from off white to a light, earthy tan.

Here are some wonderful reasons for wearing linen:

* It absorbs 20 percent or more of its weight in water and keeps you cool;
* has excellent UV protection;
* has an elegant drape and weave;
* after repeated washings, linen softens, but it wrinkles easily;
* is naturally resistant to bacteria;
* it isn’t damaged by moths;
* it does not conduct static;
* it has natural luster from its own wax;
* it is lint free;
* it is two to three times stronger than cotton;
* it can last for generations; and
* unbleached linen especially is very strong.
